What am I looking for in these webinars?

I feel reasonable aware of the general process of measuring scope 3 emissions in principle. We have been using a couple of factor datasources for some time:

• Government factors for GHG reporting
• UK's carbon footprint for 2020 This dataset presents emissions factors based on spend (kgCO₂e/£) based on categorisation by either:
  • COICOP code - product based coding, this is most appropriate for general end consumer spending, as weights can easily be derived from categorised consumer spending
  • SIC code - company principal activity based coding. Probably easier to use if you have spending from each supplier, as most companies will have one SIC code (possibly more, but not many).
  This data set itself has some issues:
  • It is published about 2.5 years after the end of the year in question
  • Inflation will apply so this needs to be applied to the factors to get a reasonable factor for a different year.
  • Factors and published UK consumption emissions are difficult to reconcile with various differing sources of UK consumer spending (so reluctantly I have given up).
  Additionally basing scope 3 on categorisations which are averages across a product or company activity type doesn't take into account the efforts of good suppliers. So getting an actual scope 3 figure from a supplier would always be better if it could be done. So one thing to look out for is company disclosures, which should give an CO₂e figure and a turnover.

CDP

• CDP Home page CDP is a not for profit, which produces several datasets based on company reporting.
• Data
• Free fund search tool Ranks 23,000 funds on environmental performance on a 1-5 leaf score, with 5 being the best. This is probably relevant to retail investors in things like SIPPs and ISAs. There are also paid for company rankings that would be more appropriate for professional investors.

• Full 2023 GHG emissions dataset summary
• Company reporting scores Company scores rate the responses given by companies in terms of quality of disclosure, rather than what is disclosed.

• Open Footprint Forum Promotes an open datamodel for GHG related datasets, which enables easier interworking between organisations. It also enables interworkable software to be developed, as an alternative to custom spreadsheets.
• aPrioiri - Software Platform for manufacturing Not quite sure why this link was suggested. It could possibly be the ability to derive an LCA from CAD drawings - difficult to tell from the BS. A better idea could possibly be gained from their sustainability page

  This contains good but basic advice for businesses. There don't seem to be useful datasources as such.
• Carbonfootprint.com
  • Free to use company carbon disclosure database. Only 113 entries at present. Some household names in there but most aren't. Shows disclosed scope 1, 2, 3 emissions for disclosing companies and indicates if there have been verified ( most haven't).
• Carbon Saver - Free? carbon factors database

  This is a repackaging of:

  • Government factors (DESNZ) for greenhouse gas reporting
  • Government factor for scope 3 emissions (aka UK's Carbon footprint) as kgCO₂e/£ but not sure without further investigation if the categorisation is by SIC code(company principal activity), or by COICOP code (product categorisation)
  • They also promote using National Grid half hourly factors rather than government factors, saying that this methodology can result in a 26% reduction in energy footprint. This is offered as a by email service.
• Scottish Enterprise - Business Sustainability This again seems to be basic advise on what to do, but doesn't include any new sources of factors or company ratings.
• Government Conversion Factors for GHG Reporting A download of the full factors spreadsheet, which is equivalent to the flat file version we use.
• Nat West group carbon planner This requires you to set up an account to log in to, which requires you to give details of your business including type, sector and turnover.
